As part of their campaign to raise awareness on the global plastic waste crisis, National Geographic argued for ditching your shampoo bottle for a bar. We were inspired to talk about the benefits discussed and add a few of our own.

Why use a shampoo bar?

1. Shampoo bars are plastic-free.

The big one. Unlike regular liquid shampoo, shampoo bars are plastic-packaging free. When you finish a shampoo bar, they are completely gone! There’s no bottle to deal with and no worry about recycling. Making the switch can be a small, easy way to reduce the amount of plastic packaging in your life—that's something to sing in the shower about!

2. Shampoo bars are cruelty-free and all-natural.

Most, if not all, shampoo bars are produced without testing on animals and their ingredients—when sourced or used—don’t harm animals. In fact, many natural shampoo bar brands are trying to protect the environment from plastics and chemicals often found in shampoo. For this reason, most shampoo bars are produced with only natural ingredients. Like us, many brands are also committed to producing sustainable shampoo by keeping their bars free of palm oil, an ingredient linked to deforestation and habitat degradation. Palm oil-free means, for example, no orangutans lost their homes for your great head of hair.

Getting away from preservatives and chemicals in your shampoo can be good for the environment and your hair. Often the chemicals found in regular shampoo can strip hair of its natural oils and leave your scalp feeling dry. In contrast, shampoo bars are gentler, safer, and can lead to a healthier scalp and hair.

3. Shampoo bars are long-lasting.

Most traditional liquid shampoos are almost 80% water. If you remove the water and toxic chemicals and add a little magic, then you’ve got a shampoo bar (please note, this recipe is secret). Shampoo bars are super concentrated and require only a little bit to go a long way. For example, one shampoo bar can last as long as three bottles of shampoo.

4. Shampoo bars are easier on your wallet.

If your bar lasts as long as three bottles of shampoo, then the cost per wash is lower. This means more money in your pocket and less time spent shopping for shampoo. Technically, the third reason covers this, but it’s worth mentioning. Plus, time is money and money is time…and wouldn’t it be better to just have the smug knowledge that you make great decisions (or at least one)?

5. Shampoo bars are travel-friendly.

No last-minute scramble to measure your liquids or purchase a tiny bottle of shampoo! Just pop your shampoo bar into a case and throw it in your suitcase. Because they’re liquid-free and lightweight, they’re carry-on friendly. Plus, there’s no risk of spilling or leaking in your suitcase. Shampoo bars will let you walk confidently through airport security! Your shampoo in the Seychelles will be oh-so-satisfying.

The same logic applies to shipping! More shampoo bars can fit in a truck, ship, or plane for shipping, meaning that their carbon footprint for the same number of hair washes is also smaller than for regular shampoo.

Are shampoo bars better?

Shampoo bars are still shampoo, but they are the sustainable choice and a purchase you can feel good about. And, if you need just one more benefit, you’ll also look good as a result.
